Heinrich Schiff is remembered as one of most significant musicians, an interpreter of striking individuality, rare stage energy, and profound presence, as well as a pedagogue who shaped a new generation of leading cellists.

Born in 1951 in Gmunden, Austria, he received his musical formation under the guidance of the renowned cellists Tobias Kühne and André Navarra and gained worldwide recognition for the depth and brilliance of his artistry, performing with the world’s foremost orchestras, conductors, and chamber ensembles. His recordings  remain reference points, earning him the Grand Prix du Disque in 1985 and the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis. He was inseparably associated with great instruments, including the “Mara” Stradivarius (1711) and the Montagnana “Sleeping Beauty” (1739).

Composers of the 20th century recognized his artistry by dedicating works to him, including Witold Lutosławski, Hans Werner Henze, Ernst Krenek, Wolfgang Rihm, Franz Hummel, and Friedrich Gulda.

Equally devoted to teaching, Schiff passed on his knowledge and vision at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the Mozarteum Salzburg, and the University of Basel. His influence endures through a remarkable circle of students, including Christian Poltéra, Reinhard Latzko, Gautier Capuçon, Natalie Clein, Richard Harwood, Sebastian Bonhöfer, Julian Steckel, Bruno Weinmeister, and Valentin Răduțiu, many of whom have become leading voices of today’s cello world.

He passed away in Vienna on 23 December 2016, at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, inspiration, and generosity.
